5.1.1.7 The Support of Migrant NGOs, Other Institutions, and Media for Long-Term Sustainability

A significant aspect of CineMigrante’s programming strategies lies in its growing and sustained collaboration with relevant public organisations dedicated to advocating for migrant rights. Since the 2011 edition, UNICEF has partnered with the festival to present an award for the best production that defends the rights of migrant children. Additionally, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been a collaborator since the festival’s inception, actively contributing to its mission. In its second edition, the IOM became involved with the Ibero-American Program IBER-RUTAS, establishing an award that recognises the best film production by Latin American directors, specifically highlighting their talent in promoting cultural diversity and the protection of migrants’ rights. Furthermore, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the National Refugee Commission (CONARE) have joined forces to present the ACNUR/CONARE Award, which honours the director of the film that most effectively addresses issues related to refugees, as well as the promotion of respect for cultural diversity and human rights.

CineMigrante benefits from the collaboration of numerous significant partners, including the National Institute of Cinema and Visual Arts (INCAA), the Interdisciplinary School of Advanced Social Studies (IDAES-UNSAM), Experimenting in Social Sciences (FCTOR-IDAES), and the National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Racism (INADI). Other notable collaborators include Canadian 80, the Spanish Cooperation (AECID) and the Embassy of Spain in Argentina, the Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua Portugal (CAMOES), the Goethe Institute, the French Embassy in Argentina, the Institute Français, Cultural San Martin, Apple of Lights, Bicentennial House, Cultural Center of Memory Haroldo Conti, Luminton, Vicente López Culture, Let Us Live Vicente López, DocLisboa: International Film Festival, Cinema Ar: Argentine Contents, Material, and Patronage Cultural Participation Buenos Aires City. Collectively, these organisations and institutions, many of which are committed to protecting migrant rights, play a crucial role in ensuring the festival’s long-term sustainability and affirming its artistic and programming integrity.

The media also plays a vital role in promoting CineMigrante and its initiatives. The festival has generated considerable interest since its inaugural edition, which attracted over 5000 attendees (Quilmes Hoy, 2010) and garnered attention from both mainstream media and specialised publications and blogs, as well as from collaborating institutions. Our analysis identified thirty media outlets that consistently report on CineMigrante. Among these are esteemed newspapers such as El Argentino.​com, Clarín, and Página 12, alongside television channels including Channel 7, Télam, Subway Channel, and Vision 7 International. Reflecting CineMigrante’s diligent outreach efforts, audio recordings of news coverage and interviews have been transcribed and incorporated into the press kit for each edition. Notably, the 2021 edition of CineMigrante experienced a marked increase in media coverage compared to its inaugural year, with many new outlets joining the existing roster. The festival also saw a heightened international media presence, with eighty-three different media sources covering the 2021 edition. The festival’s website categorised this coverage into various groups, including television, radio, digital media, specialised websites, and specialised YouTube channels, thereby illustrating the growing visibility and impact of the event.
